TVA shows us the power lines they are blasting on Raccoon Mountain

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – This probably isn’t how you pictured TVA taking down power lines.

But we told you that crews would be blasting this week at the Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Facility.

Today, TVA officials are showing you what they are doing.

They are removing high-voltage electrical lines by blowing them off the towers.

The blasting is going on Tuesday through Thursday.

That is causing some traffic blocks around the mountain.

But officials also are alerting people on the North Shore and downtown that you can sometimes hear the explosions… so don’t panic!

The crews are replacing several aging power lines attached to the generators in the mountain.

If you are not familiar with the facility, they pump water out of the Tennessee River into a reservoir on top of the mountain when they have spare electricity on the grid.

Then when they need more power, the drop the water through a giant drain at the bottom of the lake through hydro electric turbines that generate electricity for the grid.
