Two victims drown in Sale Creek following boating accident

SALE CREEK, Tenn. (WDEF) – A night on the water has turned tragic near Lee Pike after two people have drowned.

The incident happened at the 3600 block of Lee Pike shortly after 7:00 p.m. Friday.

Hamilton County EMS have confirmed that a pontoon boat towing an inner tube had some sort of problem on the water near Sale Creek.

At least two victims ended up in the water.

Officials have confirmed that Donna Berger, 53, and Randy Freeney, 74, both from Soddy Daisy, died during the incident.

The victims were part of a larger group that was boating on Chickamauga Lake, near Shale Creek.

The group, which included family members of both victims, anchored their boat to swim. It is believed that when a younger members in their party needed assistance, Berger entered the water to help.

Berger is then believed to have struggled, leading Freeney to enter the water to assist her. Freeney is also believed to have struggled while in the water.

Residents of Lee Pike called 911 and entered the water with life vests to try and assist.

Both Berger and Freeney were brought to shore.

Neither victim was wearing a personal flotation device. Alcohol was not involved.
