Two people killed and three injured during overnight shooting in Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (WDEF) – Two people were killed and three others injured following overnight shootings at two locations in Chattanooga.
Monday night before 11:30, multiple gunshot victims from two locations started arriving by ambulance and cars at Erlanger, Memorial and Parkridge East. According to Chattanooga police, the first shooting happened in the 1000 block of Jarvis Street.
“One male was deceased as a result of that shooting. 28-year old Marcus Kale. We believe there were multiple parties shooting at each other,” said Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher.
Moments later, another shooting happened in the 800 block of Woodmoore Lane.
“One person identified as 28-year old Alex Freeman was shot and killed as a result of the shooting at the Woodmoore Location,” Fletcher said.
Freeman’s sister, Tomulla Freeman described how it all went down.
“We were sitting in the house. The kids and my brother were outside. We heard shots and thought they were fireworks but the kids came running in the house and rolling on the floor. You then realize it’s not fireworks,” she said.
Freeman’s sister told News 12 her brother was a father of nine children who would have turned 29 Tuesday morning.
“Today is my brother’s birthday. We were supposed to celebrate his birthday but we’re going to celebrate it in a different way today,” she said.
During a 3 A.M. press briefing, Chief Fletcher told reporters that it was no coincidence that one shooting happened right after the other in such close proximity.
“We do have reason to believe this shooting may very likely be connected to the one that occurred a short time earlier on Jarvis,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher also said his investigators can not confirm if the two shootings are somehow connected to the Sunday night shooting on Daisy Street where four people including a 7-year old was wounded. He did however confirm that all the shootings within the past three days are gang related.
“It certainly appears to be an inter-gang beef. The reasons are marred and often very trivial,” Fletcher said.
As for Freeman, his sister said she wanted the world to know about her brother and his death.
“My brother had a big heart. He was loved and like and he will be missed by many people. He and his kids will truly miss him,” she said.
So far, there are no suspects in custody.
Police have identified the other three victims as Ivan Hill Jr., 25, Tony Jackson Jr., 25, and his wife. Their injuries are non life threatening.
There has now been a total of 10 people shot in Chattanooga over the past three days.
