Two police killed in shootout with hostage-taker

Two police officers were killed during a shootout with an armed assailant in the Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday, according to local media. The assailant was believed to have fled the scene and taken a woman hostage at a nearby school as more law enforcement rushed to attend the incident.

Prosecutors said that 3 people were killed in the attack, in addition to the gunman. In a statement on Facebook, police said that a passenger in a passing vehicle also died, and two other officers were injured.

Video posted on social media appears to show people running, and approximately six gunshots can be heard.

The police and military in Belgium have been on alert since 32 people were killed in a 2016 suicide bomb attack on the Brussels airport and subway system.
