UTC opens new Mechatronics Lab

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn (WDEF) – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga announced the grand opening of their new mechatronics lab.

Mechatronics is a branch of engineering that focuses on both electrical and mechanical systems and also includes a combination of robotics, electronics, computers and product engineering.

Over the last few years, Mechatronics has become one of the fastest-growing components of the manufacturing industry and has a tremendous need for college graduates with a degree in it.

UTC officials say there has never been a four year program like this in our region, only a 2 year program, and it was holding back students’ potential to succeed.

“The people that graduated with a 2 year degree thought that’s it they are at a dead end but with this program they can actually continue on and get a four year degree in what they do already,” says Ahad Nasab, Department Head of Engineering at UTC.

It’s their goal to give students the capability to design new machines or modify existing ones.
