UTC receives unexpected science grant

Dr. Ben Stein says grant will fund bacteria research at university

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) — UTC assistant chemistry professor Dr. Ben Stein had never applied for a grant proposal before until this past February

So he was in disbelief when his $322,000 grant was approved at first submission.

Stein says the grant funds will go towards funding bacteria research at the college.

He’s excited for work to begin and says his students will benefit the greatest.

“They’re going to get a lot of experience that really is great for helping them figure out if they want to go to grad school, if they want to go to med school,” Stein said. “It really teaches them, ‘do they like research?’ which is a really special thing to do where you fail 95 percent of the time but you’re so excited about the five percent that you succeed that you keep doing it.”

The grant is funded by the National Institutes of Health and will pay for six students to work in a lab-based study on biochemistry and microbiology.
