UTC Softball Team Picked to Win SoCon Title
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Even SoCon coaches picked the Mocs to win the league title again, they’re not necessarily fired up.
Said head coach Frank Reed,"It has been a quiet team. They just go out and work hard every day. We don’t really have one or two people stepping up and being leaders. I think they expect me to be that. I told them I’m too old."
Said infielder Sarah Beth Roberts,"Maybe we are quiet in front of him, but we have our times."
Said pitcher Taylor Deason,"Some teams the rah-rah may be what gets it done, but for others it’s not. If that’s how our team works, then that’s how we roll. That’s how we get the job done, and I’m fine with that."
Pitcher Katie Henderson is back. She’s a preseason first team All SoCon selection.
Although Henderson is fighting a bum shoulder.
And she’s not alone on the injury front.
Reporter-"How much of your lineup could be missing to start the year?"
Said Reed,"Could be a starting pitcher. Could be a starting first baseman. And then we have a couple of kids that are out. Two freshmen that were competing for a starting position who were looking really, really good."
Said Henderson,"We’re just resting it right now. Just seeing where that goes. We’ll be fine."
When Henderson gets healthy, she’ll team up with senior Taylor Deason and two freshmen to give UTC a solid pitching rotation.
Said Deason,"We have four awesome pitchers. It’s truly a staff this year, and we’re all different. That’s what is really exciting about it."
The Mocs staff will be tested long before the team jumps into SoCon action.
Said Henderson,"We’re actually playing four SEC teams, which is pretty exciting. So that will be interesting. I think it’s definitely times for us to prove we can compete with them."
