Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Collegedale

COLLEGEDALE (WDEF) – Families and friends of Vietnam Veterans were on hand this morning to honor them at Veteran’s Park in Collegedale.

Members of the 5th infantry division sponsored the event, which included the installation of a memorial brick.

That symbolizes members of the “First of the 77th” who served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971.

Survivors and their families were there for what has become a annual tradition of “Remembrance and Honor.”

Former Army Lieutenant from Texas Gerald Dunklin said, “It’s a lot of happiness, it’s tears, it’s, it’s, grieving of the fellows that, you know did not come back and their names on the back of our t-shirt and we feel it is our – our job, as their comrades to make sure they’re never forgotten; their names are always on our shirts, and that they’re never forgotten because they gave it all and they were all good soldiers.”

The former soldiers have met in different Veterans Parks all across the country, and this year they chose to meet in Collegedale.
