Volkswagen confirms they will build a new microbus for a new age

(WDEF) – It’s official.

The Microbus is back!

Or, at least, it will be.

Volkswagen teased us with a van version of their Buzz concept vehicle at the Detroit Auto Show.

But now they say they will actually build them to sell to the public in 2022.

“After the presentations at the global motor shows in Detroit and Geneva, we received a large number of letters and emails from customers who said, ‘please build this car’,” said Volkswagen CEO Dr Herbert Diess.

The ID Buzz will be all-electric.

It will also have Level 3 autonomous capabilities in the commercial version (not the consumer one).

The family of EVs will also include the ID Crozz SUV and the ID hatchback.

CEO of the North American Region, Volkswagen, Hinrich J. Woebcken says “This vehicle is the perfect balance between emotion, usability and sustainability, while also showcasing our technological leadership. The high seating position, cargo capacity, overall versatility and all-wheel drive option packaged into such an appealing design is just what our customers want from us. And it’s the perfect fit for the zero-emissions American lifestyle.”

Volkswagen introduced their first mini-van in the 1950s.

But the Type 2 would become a cultural icon of the 1960s, forever associated with hippies, the summer of love and surfing.

Here is a video of reclaiming a derelict microbus from 1967.
