Volkswagen unveils Atlas SUV for Chattanooga plant employees
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Atlas made its official debut last week at an auto show in California.
But today it came home.
The people who actually built the new SUV got their first look at the finished product.
Employees of the Volkswagen plant at Enterprise South gathered for a team meeting to see the new Atlas.
It’s a three-row SUV designed to compete against Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and others, and it will be made along with the Passat.
There will be five different trim levels when the car goes in sale in the spring of 2017 as a 2018 model.
Scott Wilson from Volkswagen says “It might seem odd to have an unveiling for employees, but if you work in the body shop, you – you only see that as raw metal welded into the shape of a car. Then it goes over to paint, and in paint shop, you paint that metal, but you don’t see when the dashboard and the seats and the carpet and everything is installed so, it’s really so everyone can see the car as it is fully built.”
We won’t find out how much the new Atlas will cost until closer to launch date.
Some 1500 new workers have been hired to build the new car.
