Vols Butch Jones Talks Quarterbacks and Coaching Slogans on UT Media Day

The Vols held their local media day on Sunday at Neyland Stadium.
With three weeks still to go in training camp, there were plenty of topics up for discussion.
Butch Jones did not unleash anymore catch phrases on media day like ‘Champions of Life’, but he was asked why he uses them so often.
Said Jones:”I think there is an NFL team that is using brick-by-brick. I think there’s another college football team that is using own it. Every football program has those. It’s a way to get the attention of your program. We haven’t been any different. I think it has been grossly over talked about.”
Grossly over talked about likely applies to the Vols quarterback battle between Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano.
Jones and his staff say the QB intangibles will also help determine the starter.
Said Jones:”We video tape everything they do from the way they run from drill-to-drill. The way they interact. We call it a quarterback leadership camera. We evaluate them as well. It is how do they interact with their teammates.”
Said offensive coordinator Larry Scott:”It’s just not about going out and running the offense on game day. It’s about running a unit. It’s about each and every day Monday through Thursday.”
Whoever gets the QB job should have a dynamic receiver to throw to in Jauan Jennings.
Said Jones:”I do think Jauan is ready to be a number one receiver. He was allergic to the weight room, and now he loves the weight room. I think he sees the results of it.”
Defensively, the mantra is simple for coordinator Bob Shoop.
Said Shoop:”We’ve got to eliminate big plays, and we’ve got to create more take-aways.”
And Shoop believes defensive end Jonathan Kongbo could be a super-star this season.
Said Shoop:”But to watch his development this year from the weight room in the winter to spring football to his conditioning in the summer to how he has practiced so far, I feel like he is in a position that he is a potentially break-out player in 2017.”
