Vols Get Santa Clara to Open Orlando Classic With Winner Possibly Facing Kansas
The bracket for the Orlando Classic was revealed Tuesday, and the Tennessee basketball team opens play at the eight-team tournament by facing Santa Clara at noon ET on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 27) at HP Fieldhouse. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
The other two teams on Tennessee’s side of the bracket are Kansas and Rhode Island. The winners of the two opening-round clashes will then meet on Friday, Nov. 28, at either noon or 2:30 p.m. ET.
The opposite side of the bracket features opening-round matchups between Michigan State and Rider, and Marquette and Georgia Tech.
Saturday is an off-day, and each team plays its third and final tournament game on Sunday, Nov. 30.
The Orlando Classic takes place at HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World resort near Orlando, Fla. Eight of the 12 tournament matchups, including the championship game, will be showcased on ESPN or ESPN2. ESPNU will carry three games and one will be exclusive to ESPN3.
The Volunteers won their only previous meeting with Santa Clara, defeating the Broncos 80-76 at the 1973 Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Santa Clara head coach Kerry Keating has a Tennessee connection, as he was an assistant coach for the Vols from 2001-03 under head coach Buzz Peterson.
The 2014-15 campaign will mark Keating’s eighth season as the Broncos head coach. Last year, Santa Clara posted a 14-19 (6-12 WCC) record.
