The Vols and Memphis Set to Clash For First Time in Five Years

Tennessee and Memphis meet on the hardwood Saturday for the first time in five years.
The Vols enter as the third ranked team in America, marking the first time Memphis has hosted a top three team since the most famous game ever between the in-state rivals.

Normally the Vols are underdogs in their series with Memphis. Not this year. And that has the Tigers buzzing.
Said Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway:”I can feel that the fans want this game as bad as we want it. The Tennessee fans are bragging right now and sitting in a great spot, which is deservedly so. They’ve earned that.”
Ten years ago saw the biggest game ever in the series as second ranked Tennessee beat number one ranked Memphis 66-62.
Said Hardaway:”I just remember that energy in the building before the game even started. You could just feel that energy in the building. It was nothing short of greatness watching that game. It was a heavyweight championship fight.”
While the Tigers are 5-4 this year, they’re still talented according to Vols coach Rick Barnes.
Said Barnes:”You know you look at Memphis they’re undefeated at home. I do think they are playing their best basketball right now. They beat UAB by 20 and are playing well.”
The Vols want to mash and bash with Williams and Schofield, while the Tigers want to dunk and dash.
Said Hardaway:”Those two guys are special. Man whoever is guarding them is going to have to be attentive. Going to have to be physical. And you are going to have to be ready to get hit the entire game and hit back.”
Said Barnes:”you’ve got to take good shots because if they get it, they are coming at you as well as any team we have played all year. That’s including Kansas. that includes Gonzaga where they attack you in transition.”

Tipoff is at noon, and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
