Walker County Principal Begins School Year With New Goals

WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) – School starts in Walker county on Thursday.

We spoke with Ridgeland High’s first female principal about her first year leading the school. Besides that accomplishment, Karen Hughes was also in the school’s first graduating class in 1990.

She says she’s excited to work in her hometown.

“My passion and target this year is to challenge everyone, the teachers, the students and community to get connected. ‘Cause I feel like if our staff’s connected with our kids, our kids are going to get connected with everything that we offer here at Ridgeland High School, and then they can go out and connect with our community.”

All incoming freshman classes sign a Commitment to Graduate banner, which is on display until their class graduates.

Hughes projects a graduation rate of over 90 percent for 2018.
