Watch the State of the Union here

Connections in Tennessee & Georgia to the State of the Union.

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – Matthew Charles of Nashville will be a guest of the First Lady tonight at the State of the Union address. He is the first drug offender released from the First Step Act.  Here is the White House description on why he was chosen to attend the speech.

Matthew Charles’s life is a story of redemption. In 1996, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for selling crack cocaine and other related offenses. While in prison, Matthew found God, completed more than 30 bible studies, became a law clerk, taught GED classes, and mentored fellow inmates. On January 3, 2019, Matthew was the first prisoner released as a result of the First Step Act.
His story also was featured on the CBS Evening News tonight.

DULUTH, Georgia (WDEF) – Part of the Democratic response to the President tonight will come from Georgia.

Democrat Stacey Abrams was chosen by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer,  who calls her a “great spokesperson (and) incredible leader (who) has led the charge for voting rights.”

In her prepared remarks, Abrams will take President Trump and the Republicans to task for causing the government shutdown.

“The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the United States, one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people – but our values.

Abrams won a lot of national backing in her razor thin loss in the race for Governor of Georgia.

And many party leaders see her as a rising star.
