Woman shot, another woman hit with car in domestic dispute in Athens

ATHENS, Tenn. (WDEF)- The Athens Police Department says that around 6:30 pm Saturday, officers responded to Brewer street.

They say a woman had been shot and another that had been struck with a motor vehicle.

Units with the Athens Police Department and the McMinn County Sheriff’s Office came to the scene and say both victims were in the driveway of the home.

Both victims are expected to be okay.

Officials believe the incident started with a domestic situation after everyone was interviewed.

Police say the mother of the children went to the child’s grandparents’ home, where her husband and children were, to pick the children up.

Officials say she was told before she arrived and when she got there that she was not going to be allowed to take the children with her.

The department says that there is no custody agreement in place and the husband did not want them to go with their mother at the time.

Police say she used her car to ram the gate of the home, striking the grandmother with the vehicle.

She exited her vehicle and walked toward her husband and his family, when the husband fired one round from a handgun, striking her in the leg.

The investigation is ongoing.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are asked to contact the Athens Police Department Detective Blake Witt at (423) 744-2739.
