Butch Jones Says Vols Need to Build Leadership Heading Into Next Season

As the Vols team moves into summer, head coach Butch Jones is hoping a little Peyton Manning rubs off on some of his players.
"When you spoke about the leadership awards, we need an Al Wilson. We need a Peyton Manning. We need an individual who’s going to hold everyone accountable. That’s what the summer is for. That’s really where your team is born."
Jones likely has a leader in Josh Dobbs, who won the quarterback challenge event in the spring game on Saturday.
"Those are evaluation tools. To do a quarterback challenge in front of 63,000 people, and it being noisy. The calm and collectiveness."
Said Dobbs,"I challenged this offense to not dwell in the past but continue moving forward. Obviously everyone had a big high coming off the Taxslayer Bowl game. My goal for the offense was to push them every day."
While Jones is happy with Dobbs, all of his backups are freshmen, so imagine how coach feels.
"Where my sleepless nights are is who is going to be number two, and who’s going to be number three? In the world of college football, you need more than one quarterback on your roster. You need a number of them because you’re one play away."
And it’s that depth that remains Jones biggest concern right now at Tennessee.
"We don’t have the depth or competitive depth that the premier programs have. Are we getting there? Yes, we are getting there, but we still have a long ways to go. We just have to be patient. Patient. Again, it’s part of the process."
