Atlanta police officer struck by stolen vehicle

ATLANTA (AP) – Atlanta police say the driver of a stolen SUV ran over an officer during a traffic stop.

WSB-TV reports that the incident took place Tuesday night in south Fulton County. The sergeant had stopped the vehicle after running the license plate.

Police told the station that the driver sped off when the officer tried to get him out of the car. The SUV door knocked down the officer, and the driver ran over his legs.

Police say they later arrested the 16-year-old driver. Police described the teen as a runaway. His name was not released.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital.
