Local Girls Take Part in Girls State

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF) – Dozens of high school girls from across our viewing area got a chance to run their own state.

It called Girls State.

About 40 students were recently sent to Lipscomb University in Nashville for a week.

There they studied politics.

Sarah Barnes from East Ridge High School says she got to go for free because the Hamilton County Pachyderm Club sponsored her.

Monday, she got a chance to share her experience and say thank you.

Barnes adds, "You basically got to meet 42 girls that were just amazing. And you got to do, we had the Tennessee Supreme Court come and we had to sit in on a case. I ran for city judge. You got to be mayor, judge, you also got to run for our little own supreme court. You basically build your own government."

Several other local schools also take part in Boys State.
