Abortion Law Exemptions among Legislative Issues the General Assembly plans to address
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton plans to bring a variety of bills to the legislation this year. Among these are exemptions to the abortion laws put into effect in August 2020.
Speaker Sexton says members are likely to file proposals to add exemptions to the abortion laws for life of the mother, cases of sexual assault and incest. The Speaker would be in favor of adding exemptions if the language of the bills is agreeable. He is hopeful that members can work together in a bipartisan approach.
He also says he wants to invite more perspective when handling the abortion laws.
“I believe that in the Republican caucus, our members should listen to the women of the caucus and have a better understanding of what they would like to see, why they’d like to see it and how they feel about it,” Sexton said.
He continued, “Instead of us pontificating, all men talking about what we think should happen, I think we should do a better job of listening to the women in Tennessee.”
Transportation and foster care reform are among the other issues Speaker Sexton plans to address.
He says he would like to add express lanes to busy interstates and highways across Tennessee.
Sexton said he would also like to invite more families to participate in the foster care system. He wants to figure out why so many in the foster system are constantly on the move.
