Betty White Challenge Brings Large Donations to Local Animal Shelters

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF): Betty White, often referred to as America’s Grandmother, was not only an exceptional actress, but also an avid animal advocate.

In honor of Betty and her love for animals, the Betty White challenge went viral.

The challenge started after the late actress passed away and asked fans of hers to donate $5 dollars to a local animal shelter.

Well, the fans have delivered!

Lauren Mann, Director of Advancement at McKamey Animal Center says, “It was just non stop yesterday. I mean there was one coming in every thirty seconds almost for a couple of hours. So, as of right now, we have just surpassed $15,000 total for the day and there’s still more coming in.”

“Donations are what we rely on heavily to be able to operate from day to day so to receive that much in one day is just a huge success for us,” continues Mann.

The director says these donations save lives whether its being able to provide food or life saving surgery.

The Humane Educational Society was also able to benefit from this challenge.

Rebecca Bryan, Executive Director of Humane Educational Society says, “We actually raised over $17,000 dollars yesterday which is pretty amazing for one day of fundraising.”

Bryan says there is an adoption special for their senior pets a.k.a the golden girls and for pets who have been at the shelter for 100 days or more.

“Senior pets are actually, honestly, the most heartbreaking ones to see in the shelter. They’ve usually lived their whole lives with someone, and for whatever reason they end up in the shelter,” continues Bryan.
