Charles Toney’s attorney explains injuries from beating video
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The attorney for Charles Toney and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office have been trading accusations over how badly he was injured when he was arrested two weeks ago.
Lee Merritt said in a press conference on Thursday that Toney suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, broken finger and a broken nose while being punched in handcuffs by a deputy.
But the Sheriff’s Office responded that none of those injuries were reported in the initial medical evaluation.
And on Monday the Sheriff said there were no injuries that required hospitalization or stitches.
On Friday, Merritt said that Toney went to Parkridge East the next day, where he was diagnosed with the collapsed lung and broken bones.
Hospital officials wanted him to file a criminal report then, but Toney did not want to.
Instead he went to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville for followup treatment.
Merritt says they also confirmed the injuries.
He says he plans to file a civil rights lawsuit against the Sheriff’s Office in the next week.
