Cleveland Firemen bust toddler out of hot car at Walmart

CLEVELAND, Tennessee (WDEF) – Authorities had to break a window out of a hot vehicle to remove an infant at the south Walmart Monday afternoon.

According to the Cleveland Daily Banner, Sgt. Evie West of the Cleveland Police Department said the 18-month-old child was reportedly left in a car at the store for at least 20 minutes just after noon Monday.

She identified the mother of the child as Jamie M. Benjudah, 36, who was not charged on Monday.

The Cleveland Banner states that information on whether charges will be filed was not available this morning.

The mother, who fire department reports indicated lives in Trafford, Ala.,was inside the store and had to be paged to come to her vehicle.

The condition of the child was not available this morning.

The Cleveland Fire Department was the first emergency agency to respond to concerns about the child, just after 12:30 p.m. Monday.

“Engine 1 was at Walmart on Treasury Drive shopping when a bystander approached Firefighter Jake Hill and advised him there was an infant in an unattended vehicle,” noted the CFD report. The report indicated the vehicle in question was a Dodge Grand Caravan.

Hill contacted Battalion Chief Bobby Gaylor about the situation, and the fire department officials approached the vehicle and saw “the infant sitting in a car seat with the windows up, doors locked and vehicle turned off.”

The Emergency 911 Center was advised of the situation, and the Cleveland Police Department and Bradley County Emergency Medical Serve were dispatched to the scene.

“The infant was sweating very heavily and seemed in distress, so I made a decision to have firefighter Hill bust out the window, and we removed the infant to a safe area,” Gaylor added. He made contact with the mother, who was apparently inside the store, and then the fire department turned the scene over to the police department.

West said a Department of Children’s Services referral was made.
