Coach Jones Preparing For the Unknowns in Vols First Game Against Georgia Tech
Vols coach Butch Jones calls a season opener a game of the unknowns.
And there will be plenty of unknowns for Tennessee when they face Georgia Tech on Monday. Like how will the Vols stop the Jackets option offense, and who will play quarterback for Tennessee?
When the Vols kick against Georgia Tech, they’ll be missing two starters.
Linebacker Darrin Kirkland Junior is out after undergoing knee surgery today and offensive lineman Drew Richmond has been suspended.
Said Jones:”Drew Richmond will not make the trip to Atlanta. He’ll be suspended for a violation of team rules. If he does everything that he needs to do, he’ll be available, and he’ll be back for Indiana State.”
And even though game week is here, Coach Jones wasn’t ready to say whether Quinten Dormady or Jarrett Guarantano will be the starting quarterback.
Said Jones:”In terms I want them competing. They may compete all the way through pregame warm-ups. I think that’s healthy.”
Reporter:”Do you feel like both of them are worthy of playing?”
Said Jones:”I do. I think the circumstances of the game comes into play. What’s your rhythm on offense? How are you doing? This is a game where your possessions are going to be limited. There are teams that have had only 20 plays at halftime.”
Because Tennessee will face limited possessions against Georgia Tech’s option offense, UT will have to hunker down in three key areas.
Said Jones:”First and foremost obviously is taking care of the football. Specials teams will have an impact in this football game, and then the mental errors.”
Jones did say that highly regarded freshman offensive lineman Trey Smith will start against the Yellow Jackets.
Said Jones:”And then Trey Smith has worked exceptionally hard. I know he is excited. We had to kind of calm him down a little bit yesterday. He brings a whole other element in terms of toughness.”
