Freeman’s 30th Homerun of the Year Not Enough in Braves Loss to Marlins
ATLANTA (AP) – Ichiro Suzuki scored two runs and drove in another in the 900th multihit game of his career and the Miami Marlins boosted their fading wild-card hopes with a 7-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night.
Miami, which began the night five games out of a playoff spot, won for only the fifth time in its last 17 games.
With the Marlins trailing 2-0, Suzuki ripped a single to right in the third to bring home a run. Christian Yelich followed with a two-run double to the gap in right-center.
The 42-year-old Suzuki sparked another three-run outburst off Matt Wisler (6-12) in the fifth, hardly looking his age as he sped around the bases for a leadoff triple.
Freddie Freeman and Matt Kemp homered for the Braves. For Freeman it was his 30th of the year, the first time he has achieved that homerun milestone in one season. He also extended his hitting streak to 19 straight games.
Justin Nicolino (3-6) claimed the win with two hitless innings of relief. A.J. Ramos earned his 35th save.
