Gaelic Storm Kicks Off Concert Series in Athens

The Athens Area Council for the Arts presents Gaelic Storm, four-time Billboard World chart-toppers, on Tuesday September 16, 2014, at 7:30 pm. Gaelic Storm is part of the 2014-2015 Big Time/Small Town Performance Season and takes place at Athens City Middle School Auditorium, 200 Keith Lane, Athens, Tennessee. All Big Time/Small Town Performances are sponsored by BB&T, Bryan’s 68 Wine and Spirits, Crescent Sock Company-The Sock Shop, and Madison Avenue Compounding Pharmacy. All AACA programs are supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission.

After 10 albums and nearly 3,000 live shows, Gaelic Storm – the chart-topping, multi-national Celtic band — is on tour celebrating their greatest hits album “Full Irish.” Gaelic Storm has straddled the line between tradition and innovation for nearly two decades. Led by founding members Patrick Murphy and Steve Twigger, the group infuses traditional Celtic music with modern influences, updating the genre for a new generation of fans raised on rock, country, and folk. Along the way, the musicians have topped the Billboard World Chart four times, appeared in the blockbuster film Titanic (where they performed "Irish Party in Third Class," an unreleased song made available for the first time on “Full Irish”) and earned a reputation as a hard-touring, genre-bending band.

A party band in the family-friendly sense of the word, Gaelic Storm appreciates building relationships with fans. “We’ve become friends with so many of them,” Murphy says, “when someone at a show tells me they’ve never seen Gaelic Storm before, I say, ‘welcome to the family.’" The group’s ability to incorporate a rock sensibility into their sound affords them a rare crossover appeal. Recently, they’ve performed with acts ranging from Zac Brown Band and the Goo Goo Dolls to Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovett, at events as varied as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Milwaukee’s Summerfest. With their signature acoustic production, Gaelic Storm blends indie-folk and world grooves with Celtic tradition.
