Hamilton County picks school board member to fill empty commission seat

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Commission filled two empty seats in our area during their Wednesday meeting.

The first task was finding a new commissioner to replace Chester Bankston who retired.

They chose a current school board member to move over.

Dr. Steve Highlander will have to vacate his school board job to assume the commission seat.

“We did a little bit of research and the Tennessee code annotated says I will leave today. As soon as I leave here I plan to go and resign from the school board position but fortunately I will be part of the process of picking a new school board member.”

The Commission also appointed an interim state representative for the Ooltewah area to replace Mike Carter, who died in office.

Their choice is his widow, Joan Carter.

“When you’re together as long as Mike and I were, you really grow together. For as long as I can remember, he valued me as his sounding board. He ran things by me.”

She will hold the seat until the Governor calls a special election.
