Harlem Globetrotters honor local Afghan war veteran

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Harlem Globetrotters honored Army veteran Jason Smith at the YMCA this morning.

Smith lost both legs in an IED explosion while serving in Afghanistan.

Now he’s back home and serving the community.

Smith coaches for the Miracle League, which gives those with physical or cognitive challenges a chance to play sports.

Sgt. Jason Smith told us “It’s awesome. It’s an honor to be here. They called me and asked if I wanted to meet up with them, and I said absolutely. I remember seeing them when I was little. So it was nostaglia and everything. It was crazy.”

And Globetrotter Orlando El Gato had this to say about Sgt. Smith.

“Sometimes people feel that way that I served the United States, now they have to serve me. And he’s doing the total opposite. And that actually makes him a hero A real hero.”

Smith will launch the honorary tip at the beginning of the Globetrotter’s game Friday night at the U-T-C McKenzie Arena.
