Loaded Ruger handgun found in carry-on bag at airport

3rd gun violation so far this year at Chattatnooga Metro

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – TSA officers found a loaded gun during screenings this morning at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.

The loaded Ruger .380 caliber handgun was in a passenger’s carry-on bag.

The protocol is that TSA alerts police, who then took possession of the bag and take the passenger out of the screening area.

This was the third gun found by TSA officers this year, after a record 24 found in 2021.

“Passengers must remember they are responsible for the contents of bags and our advice is they thoroughly inspect all personal belongings to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items before coming to the airport,” said Steve Wood, TSA Federal Security Director for Tennessee.

The proper way to transport weapons is put them in a proper carrying case, unloaded, in your checked baggage.  And you must declare it to the airline.

But carry-on  bags are a no-no.

In addition to potential criminal charges, passengers who bring firearms to a checkpoint face civil penalties from TSA: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/civil-enforcement
