Local reading rally helps children prepare for the school year

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Executive Women International of Chattanooga invited the community to its inaugural reading rally, “Readers Rock!”

The free event focused on promoting literacy, education, and helping local children successfully begin the upcoming school year.

Organizers provided books and school supplies for children to take home, serving around 200 children and their families.

EWI President Vicki Chapman said providing educational resources for children has always held a special place in her heart and in her family’s story.

“So my daughter ended up, because she loved to read so much and loved children, she ended up becoming a school teacher. So now she’s passing on her love of reading to her first graders. That touches me because I didn’t always love reading as a child, but now that I’m an adult, I love it. So I want to get kids started at a younger age so they don’t wait as late as I did to start loving to read.”

Although this was EWI’s first reading rally, organizers hope to make it an annual event.

They said the rally not only helps local students prepare for the school year, but also gives local authors an opportunity to connect with young readers and inspire a lifelong love of reading.
