Marion Co Hopes Third Time is the Charm in State Title Game

Jasper, TN-(WDEF) Marion County is back in the state championship game for the third year in-a-row.
But so far, the Warriors have come up short in winning the gold ball.
Saturday, Marion County hopes the third time is the charm as they battle Trezevant in a rematch of last year’s 2A title tilt.
Reaching the state title game three straight years is a routine that never gets old.
Said Warriors linebacker Eli Morrison:”To be able to go to the biggest game in football en every state is kind of. It’s crazy.”
Said head coach Joey Mathis:”You know every year we keep being told that we won’t be as good as the year before. These kids take that as a personal challenge every year.”
Said running back Hunter McClain:”The ultimate goal is to play in a state title and win it. We’ve played in two of them, but we’re really hoping to win the third one.”
The Warriors almost got the gold ball last year before losing to Trezevant 40-35.
Said Mathis:”We’ve been working on that since we started in July to chase those five points. That’s kind of been our motto throughout the season.”
Said lineman Alex Kirkendoll:”The day after we came up with it. The chasing five points, and we’re not going to stop until we get it.”
The Warriors will also have to chase Trezevant running back Cordarrian Richardson again. Last year he ran for 342-yards against Marion County.
Said McClain:”We’ve played a lot of good backs, but we’ve never played one at that level. We’ve played some that can have a few plays like that, but it seemed like every play, he was at another level.”
Said Kirkendoll:”He’s a great running back. Hard effort. He’s straight downhill. Something we struggled with last year was tackling, and we’ve been working on that throughout the season.”
Saturday will be a challenge, but winning a state title is not supposed to be easy.
Reporter:”How cool is it that you are getting a rematch with the team that beat you last year?”
Said Kirkendoll:”If I could pick anybody, that’s who I would want it to be. That’s what the chasing five points came from. If you want to get revenge, that’s the way to get it.”
Marion Co and Trezevant kick at noon est Saturday in Cookeville.
