Ohio man charged with child porn in Dalton; investigation extends back to Ohio

DALTON, Georgia(WDEF) – A child pornography investigation has detectives in Whitfield County Georgia working with police in Middletown Ohio.

The man at the center of that investigation has been identified by authorities as Rickey Dean Shaffer, 25.

Shaffer is being held at the Whitfield County jail for allegedly possessing child porn but he may also face charges back in Ohio where authorities say the explicit materials were produced.

"The best information I have right now, we certainly know he was in possession of; very easily was the one taking the pictures. I don’t know the details if he was involved himself in the act but certainly was in possession of questionable photos," said Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood.

The child porn case against Shaffer began back in Middletown Ohio where an incident report was filed. News 12 obtained a copy of that report from CBS affiliate WKRC in Cincinnati.

According to the incident report, one of Shaffer’s relatives discovered pornographic images on his phone. The images reportedly displayed disturbing and explicit images of very young or infant children engaged in sexual activity with what appeared to be an adult.

One of Shaffer’s family members contacted the Whitfield County Georgia Sheriff’s Office about the allegations. That family member reportedly told Whitfield authorities that Shaffer had produced child pornography back in Ohio and then moved to Dalton Georgia.

"They actually got in the car and drove to Whitfield County from Ohio. They reported the alleged incidents that they believe to have occurred in Ohio," the Sheriff said.

Detectives traced Shaffer to a home on Peerless Way; so well off the beaten path that it doesn’t register on Google Maps.

"Through the course of the interview, he turned out to be very cooperative and acknowledged the alleged incidents that they were true," Sheriff Chitwood said.

It’s unclear how many alleged victims are involved and if any of those victims are also children from the Whitfield County area.

"That’s what we are checking. The investigation continues so I will be curious to see where it leads us," Sheriff Chitwood said.
