One person killed in Gordon County plane crash

GORDON COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) — One person was killed in a plane crash in Gordon County.

According to the FAA, an innovator experimental, amateur-built aircraft crashed in a field in Calhoun, Georgia at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday. Only the pilot was aboard.

Officials with the Gordon County CountySheriff’s Office say deputies were dispatched to the area of Spencer Drive south of Calhoun in response to a report of a small aircraft crash.  They say deputies arrived to find that a small plane had crashed into a wooded area within a few hundred yards of a residential neighborhood.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim of this tragic accident,”  Sheriff Mitch Ralston said.

Officials with the FAA say they will release the aircraft registration after authorities release the pilot’s name.

The FAA is investigating the case and the NTSB will determine probable cause of the crash.
