Ooltewah man accused of extreme animal cruelty

OOLTEWAH, Tennessee(WDEF) –  An Ooltewah man is accused of animal abuse so severe that animal advocates are shaking their heads in disbelief.

Josesph Gann, 39, has been charged with cruelty to animals after authorities said he beat a dog to death over the head with a hammer.

Authorities told WDEF X-rays of the dogs head confirmed extreme blunt force trauma.

But the beating was not the only at of cruelty Gann is accused of.

"As we investigated further when another witness came forward and said he witnessed the gentleman throwing small dog into a pit bull who immediately took the dog and mauled it," said Humane Educational Society Executive Director Bob Citrillo.

The dog Citrillo was referring to reportedly died.

Nine other dogs were taken away from Gann and placed in protective custody.

Gann was also charged with DUI, possession of illegal drugs, unlawful carrying of a firearm and unlawful removal of a vehicle registration.

Gann is being held without bond.
