Ooltewah man charged with raping a female Uber driver

Restaurant had called him a ride believing he was too drunk to drive

UPDATE: A check of his previous arrests in Hamilton County shows a criminal history going back to 2003.  Most are driving offenses, several involving alcohol. He was last charged with DUI in 2018.  But none of the previous charges were violent in nature as these latest are.

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Hamilton County investigators have charged an Ooltewah man with raping a female Uber driver.

The case began with a restaurant employee trying to do the right thing.

The employee called for and paid for an Uber because they thought Zachery Johnson was too drunk to drive on Saturday night.

But the driver told police that he tried to take control of the SUV, grabbed her arms and throat and kissed her.

A criminal report says the driver’s boyfriend called her during the attack an heard it on the phone.

He called 911, but they could not track the vehicle for another 90 minutes.

Deputies eventually found the car three miles from the restaurant and rescued her.

Johnson faces charges of aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault, aggravated sexual battery and carjacking.
