Plans change for Medal of Honor Museum

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Plans are changing to build a Medal of Honor Museum at Coolidge Park.

That’s after public outcry last year because people didn’t want to lose so much park space to a museum.

Today, Major General Bill Raines announced the Charles H. Coolidge Medal of Honor Heritage Center will be housed in the existing building by the Aquarium.

Raines led that original effort for the museum.

“We’re going to build off of the unfortunate, uh, you know demise of the other, and maybe demise is the wrong word, but the in-completion; and we’re now going to build off that and make, uh, essentially make Hamilton County, uh Chattanooga, benefit out of that investment that was already here.”

They’ve set a goal of one thousand veteran lifetime memberships of $500 each. That’s to help reach their first fundraising benchmark of one million dollars by the end of 2017.

Organizers plan to open the museum by 2020.
