Residents to vote on Varnell PD

VARNELL, Ga. (WDEF) – The final decision on whether Varnell, Georgia will have a police department will be up to its citizens.

After weeks of friction and in-fighting between city leaders, city council met last night and decided to put the issue on the November ballot.

City council voted last month to disband the police department.

That move was vetoed by Mayor Anthony Hulsey, and so far, council has not tried to over-ride the veto.

The question on the ballot would be whether to lower some property taxes in the city, if the Whitfield county sheriff”s department ended-up providing police services to Varnell.
