Ribbon cutting for new Southside Community Park

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Chattanooga officials cut the ribbon Wednesday on the city’s newest park.

The Southside Community Park is at 3500 Central Avenue in Alton Park.

It is on the location of the former Charles A. Bell Elementary School, several blocks off the beaten path of 38th street and across some railroad tracks from the Villages at Alton Park.

The school was closed in 1989.

The building was torn down in 2011.

Former District 7 Councilman Chris Anderson and Alton Park neighborhood leaders began working on turning the site into a community park.

Now it boasts a large green space/lawn, with trees, benches, picnic tables, a pavilion and walking track.

The plan is to connect it to the Tennessee Riverwalk.
