Rich Lit Crew program at DuPont Elementary encourages students to read

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — A Hamilton County elementary school is encouraging students to read by giving them books with characters just like them.

Teacher Brenda Morris reads to her kindergarten class at DuPont Elementary School.

She wanted to come up with a way to encourage kids to read so she helped create a program for the entire school.

“The committee is called Rich Lit Crew and so the goal is to get diverse books in every classroom and this is our first big initiative that we have done on the school wide scale,” Morris said.

Morris hopes this will spark a love for reading at an early age.

“When I was growing up, I didn’t see a lot of books with characters that looked like me and so it kind of took awhile for my love for reading to develop. So our hope is that by getting students these books early on in their life they are able to see themselves and possibly see things that they could do with their future,” Morris said.

She says they are looking for books with all sorts of different characters and themes.

“What we are doing is we are scouring the Internet and doing that hard work of finding books that are already published and sometimes aren’t thought about in the general purchasing of books in libraries. We are finding those unique books featuring unique characters and it is not just about ethnicity. So we are finding books that are featuring characters that come from different walks of life. So maybe they have single parents, maybe they are raised by their grandparents. They are just different things that they are dealing with,” Morris said.

They are fundraising so they can give away the books for free.

“We would love if you donated. We are really close to reaching our goal.”

People can give donations at the school until December 9. For more information, they can also email The school will officially kick off the program with a big reveal on December 17.
