TECH BYTE: Facebook Company Gets New Name
MENLO PARK, Calif. (WDEF) — A big change is coming to Facebook – at least for the company as a whole.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook is changing its corporate name to Meta.
“It is time for us to adopt a new company brand to encompass everything that we do, to reflect who we are and what we hope to build,” Zuckerberg said.
The move isn’t as crazy as it sounds.
The company name may be changing, but Zuckerberg says their mission and social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are all staying the same.
“We are still the company that designs technology around people,” he said. “But now we have a new North Star to help bring the metaverse to life. And we have a new name that reflects the full breadth of what we do.”
If the name metaverse sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Zuckerberg says Meta comes from the Greek word “beyond.”
The term metaverse basically means virtual universe – often in a work of fiction.
This change, however, is the real deal.
“From now on, we’re going to be metaverse first, not Facebook first,” Zuckerberg said. “That means that over time, you won’t need to use Facebook to use our other services, and as our new brand starts showing up in our products, I hope that people come to know the Meta brand and the future that we stand for.”
Zuckerberg is calling the metaverse the next chapter not just for the company, but for the Internet too.
The CEO says their business is two different segments – one for their family of apps, and the other for work on future platforms.
He says the new company brand encompasses everything that they do.
