Think twice about giving kids chicks & bunnies for Easter

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – Cute chicks might seem to be great Easter gifts for kids, but those chicks become chickens, and are harder to care for.

Zoo Director Darde Long says that parents and pet owners need to consider carefully the long term pet needs, and their ability to properly care for them.

She says tiny chicks are easily injured by young children.

“Some people surely do and for more domestic species, we encourage people who have the space, and the knowledge and the desire to keep an animal for awhile, it’s not a bad thing to do. But you need to think about it and make sure that you’re making a responsible choice whether it’s a puppy, a kitten, a duck, a chick, or of course, a bunny.”

The zoo has lots of information to help potential pet owners make responsible decisions for what kind of pet is right for your family.
