Varnell City Mayor Reinstates Police Department

VARNELL, Ga. (WDEF) – The City of Varnell’s Police Department has been reinstated just two days after the council voted to dissolve their entire department.

A meeting was held earlier this week by Varnell City Mayor Anthony Hulsey to discuss the City Council’s decision to rid the entire police department.  After the discussion, Mayor Hulsey chose to veto the council’s decision.

Thursday, the Varnell Police Department was reinstated and the officers continued their duty to the city.

Mayor Anthony Hulsey says,  “Whether you like the police department or not, they are here and have been here for years for a reason.” This was the reason Varnell City Mayor Anthony Hulsey vetoed the city council vote to disband the Varnell Police Department.

Brent Newsome, former city council member believes, “It was evident that the council did not act in accordance with what the people want.”

A packed house gathered in Varnell last night and residents voiced their frustration. Newsome says that it was important for residents to come out and be heard.

Newsome says “I think I was as angry as everybody else in the city I used to serve on the council 4 years ago so I am very well connected with everything that is going on and to know that this council had the audacity to take it upon themselves to take away our police force, it’s absurd.”

The Mayor tearfully pleaded with the community for patience and understanding as he worked with the city manager to do this veto by the book because the council may not have. Hulsey says “It should have been done in a better way to advertise it correctly, to sit down and talk about it, look at the numbers, is it going to benefit the city and the citizens and get yall’s input”

For now, the police department is back in business and the overwhelming majority of the community is pleased. Newsome believes wholeheartedly, “Our police force has 100%backing of myself and everyone who was in that room. It’s not like your standard police force, these guys care.”
