Dekalb County authorities say mom tortured her infant: Bond set at $100,000

FORT PAYNE, Alabama(WDEF) An Alabama woman is in jail after authorities say she tortured her child.

Brandy Lea Watson, 20, was charged with child abuse involving torture.

According to the district attorney’s office, the investigation into Watson began when doctors confirmed to both the Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Human Resources that Watson physically abused her infant.

The child reportedly suffered a broken leg.

Prosecutors told WDEF there was enough evidence in the case to get a a grand jury indictment against Watson.

Once the indictment was handed down, a warrant was issued for Watson’s arrest. According to one deputy, Watson surrendered herself to the Detention Center where she was immediately booked.

A judge set her bond at $100,000.

WDEF has reached out to several family members and friends via Facebook. Once the original story was posted, many of her family and friends came to her defense. But only one family member agreed to give WDEF a comment as long as her identity was kept a secret.

"Well I wasn’t really sure that it was my relative at first until I confirmed it with another family member. It’s actually shocking. I just can’t believe that anyone would do anything like this to a child. I hope to god the accusations are wrong," she said.

Another person claiming to be a family member released information to WDEF that was consistent with information from the district attorney’s office.

WDEF has also reached out to the Sheriff Jimmy Harris about the investigation but he has made it clear that he will not comment.
