New Tennessee license plates to provide greater security
Decals will be printed with license plate number, will be harder to remove
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) — For the first time since 2006, Tennessee has new license plates.
The new blue plates were voted in by the public and feature a little bit of everything, from the option to have “In God We Trust” displayed over the state’s three-star insignia to improved decals that offer better security.
Monica Brown, the assistant chief deputy for the Hamilton County Clerk, said that decals are now being printed complete with one’s license plate number and that the decals were additionally made harder to peel off and remove.
“In previous years, it was just a generic number that was on that decal,” Brown said. “So if someone peeled that off of your license plate, it could be put on anything and the police wouldn’t know the difference. Now that safety feature is built-in so if you have 123ABC on your license plate and someone puts it on 456DDF, then you’ll know that that decal does not belong to that license plate.”
All Tennessee residents looking to receive the new license plate will have to wait until their designated renewal month to do so.
